The Purpose of Latin Study

1.       To develop the ability to read and understand a written passage

2.       To show the relevance of Latin and Greco-Roman culture through its influence on language, literature and culture

3.       To understand a language system in general

4.       To understand and appreciate culture in general

5.       To foster vocabulary expansion

6.       To become life-long learners

 

Benefits of Latin Study

1.       Students develop skills and strategies for acquiring new vocabulary

2.       Students develop the skill to structure sentences

3.       Students increase their readiness to acquire other languages

4.       Students develop mental processes such as alertness, attention to detail, memory, abstract reasoning, logic and critical reasoning

5.       Students gain insight in how a language works

6.       Students can lay a solid foundation for language study

 

Curriculum Standards

1.       Communication

1.1               Students read, understand and interpret Latin

·         Read and understand words, phrases and sentences in context

·         Demonstrate reading comprehension of Latin passages

·         Demonstrate a knowledge of vocabulary, basic inflectional systems and syntax appropriate to reading level

·         Draw conclusions and make inferences from selections read

1.2               Students use orally, listen to and write Latin as part of the process for understanding written Latin

·         Recognize and reproduce the sounds of Latin with accurate pronunciation

·         Respond orally, in writing, and through demonstration to simple questions, statements, commands or other stimuli

·         Write simple phrases and sentences in Latin

·         Draw conclusions and make inferences orally or in writing

2.       Culture

2.1               Students demonstrate an understanding of the relationship among practices, people and perspectives of Greco-Roman culture

·         Identify major historical and political figures and forms of Roman government and comprehend their significance in Roman history

·         Identify the basic features of Roman daily life and comprehend their significance

·         Identify the physical and geographical features of Rome

·         Illustrate the role of Rome in history and culture

2.2               Students demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the perspectives and the products of Greco-Roman culture

·         Recognize major architectural features, engineering products and art forms of the Greeks and Romans as representations of their cultural perspectives

·         Identify major writers and their works as reflections of their historical settings

·         Identify food, clothing and artifacts to form generalizations and make inferences about daily life and customs

·         Identify the principal Greek and/or Roman deities and mythological heroes and the stories associated with them as reflections of Roman values

3.       Comparisons/Connections

3.1               Students reinforce and further their understanding of their own language and other disciplines and expand their knowledge through the study of Latin and ancient civilizations

·         Recognize common Latin and Greek roots and prefixes/suffixes and identify their role in the development of English vocabulary

·         Recognize the importance of Latin in the specialized vocabulary of other disciplines

·         Recognize and comprehend the use of explicit allusions to mythology and history in literature and other disciplines

3.2               Students acquire information and recognize the distinctive viewpoints that are available only through the study of Latin and Greco-Roman civilization

·         Recognize that specific Latin vocabulary and structures are a reflection of the uniqueness of the language

·         Gain awareness of the ways I which the ancients thought and acted

·         Gain awareness of the influence of Latin and Greco-Roman culture on the development of  Western values

3.3               Students compare and contrast their own language and culture with those of the Greco-Roman world

·         Identify the similarities and differences in the elements of English and Latin

·         Identify the similarities and differences in ancient and contemporary cultures

4.2               Students show evidence of becoming life-long learners by applying their knowledge of Latin and ancient civilizations
